We held a LEAF Open Farm Sunday on 11th June at our new dairy unit, Trefarclawdd Farm in Oswestry.

Informative demos and talks were organised throughout the day for the public. There were tours of the milking facilities, environmental talks and activities like feeding the calves.

The DPJ Foundation – mental health support in agriculture, were in attendance of which we raised money for on the day. The raffle was supported by lots of local businesses with some fantastic prizes donated.

With approximately 1,500 people in attendance and the pizza trailer selling out it was a resounding success. A huge thanks to our suppliers, volunteers and our staff who helped us and supported an informative Open Farm event.

The dairy girls certainly enjoyed being center of attention!

STEWARDSHIPS

Stewardships are a very important factor to our farms and estates. We have several sites (SSI) on our estates which we protect alongside the wildlife. Being involved in a 4 year countryside stewardship scheme we are continually developing wildlife habitats to enhance biodiversity and native species. One of them has been in full bloom recently! We have been taking parts of farmland out of production and creating wild flower margins.

In the summer the wildflower margins are in full bloom and not only are they beautiful in sight but also in density where wildlife thrives.

WILDLIFE

Lately we have been siting a range of nesting boxes around our farms and estates suitable for specific species such as owls, kestrels, birds and bats.

Owls bring many benefits to our land, whether it’s their beauty or their predator tendencies. Owls dine on mice and other rodents as well as large insects that can wreak havoc on our crops.

As farmers, we can minimise our use of pesticides to by inviting rodent and insect-eating owls onto the land and what better way to do this than provide housing for them.

NATURAL HABITAT

We strive to establish the balance between managing the natural habitat to keep our estates and farms neat and tidy and leaving the habitat in its natural state to enhance the ecology of the setting.

Recently, on the estates, we have been deliberately leaving fallen trees and log piles due to thousands of invertebrates including include beetles, hoverflies, spiders and bugs rely on deadwood, which in turn provide food for lots of other animals.
